Are you Eating Your Way Through the Menopause?

Nigel Denby Dietician

It’s not enough that many of us suffer with lousy sleep due to night sweats, hot flushes, mood swings, putting on weight we can’t seem to shift and many of you are not only still working but coping with elderly parents, kids and now a global pandemic.

How can food and our relationship with it affect our menopause? What about Bio Identical hormones and Body Identical hormones, what are they? Are they safe? How do they help?

We also know that there is evidence to show that women are going through the menopause earlier than our grandmothers, why? Because our lifestyle is more stressful, stress means higher cortisol levels and when that happens day after day, month after month that has a direct effect on other hormones.

The sad reality of this is women losing their sex hormones far sooner than previous generations whilst still being expected to work much longer - this will have a devastating effect on bone health, leading to a greater risk of osteoporosis, plus cardiac problems and dementia.

These are areas of our health that are protected by our sex hormones, so losing them in your early 40s rather than your early 50s is leaving you at greater risk.

However..it's not all gloom and doom, there is much you can do to help yourself and finding the right person to help is key.

Food can be a powerful tool to help you negotiate the menopause - knowing what to avoid, what you can increase, what supplements will help and those that are a waste of money. Bio identical hormones are becoming mainstream too - so knowing more about them and how they work may help you make informed decisions about your menopause.
