Functional Medicine

Gayle Marchant

Food as medicine is certainly not new and for many of us right now it can be a bit of a problem as we cope with the third lockdown -the end might be in sight, but really still barely visible. Some of us have complex health issues that we are struggling with and this is not a great time for getting help via the NHS. So how can Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine help us and where does it fit in with our usual medical route for treatment?

Gayle Marchan's road to her practice came via being a vegetarian in the 80s when it must have been quite hard to eat broadly and well unless in a large city, add to that teaching in a secondary school where the constant stress of long days teaching coupled with poor nutrition lead to the beginnings of hypothyroidism and other health problems.

A change of career after treatment for leaky gut, yeast overgrowth, chronic fatigue and sleep problems means this woman knows what it's like to have a myriad of symptoms but hard to get a handle on what is going on and then treatment and recovery.

As well as her work as a Nutritional Therapist Gayle also works with many people in the community with the Healthy Eating Project, teaches Year 1 students at the College of Naturopathic Medicine, is a certified Brain Health Programme Practitioner and is about to qualify as a Functional Medicine Practitioner.

Phew..a fair bit here to get our teeth into! I am really looking forward to getting a better understanding of these different aspects of healthcare and finding out what I can do to keep my energy up, my health protected as I wait for the inevitable jab so we can start life again.
